Our History

With the support from the community, we have served five million meals since 1977!
Since 1977, Meals on Wheels has grown from delivering three meals a day to more than 1,700 meals!

From our humble beginnings, as a component of the Visiting Nurses Association’s work, it was apparent that the dietary needs of the homebound, elderly, ill and disabled population in our community were not met. As demand continued to increase, Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana became an independent agency in 1977 in order to address these nutritional issues.

2005 Groundbreaking
Since 1977, Meals on Wheels has served the dietary needs of our community and strengthened our Mission. Starting with the delivery of only three meals, Meals on Wheels has grown to annually serve nearly 3,300 individuals; delivering more than five million meals!

Realizing little research had been conducted in the area of senior nutrition, Meals on Wheels Association of America , with the generous underwriting from the Harrah’s Foundation, commissioned a research study entitled “The Causes, Consequences and Future of Senior Hunger in America” in 2007.

The most comprehensive national research study to focus exclusively on senior hunger in the United States; the study was released at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging in March 2008, in Washington, D.C. The work reveals hunger as a serious threat facing millions of seniors in the United States, including thousands in Northwest Indiana.

2006 Newpaper Article
The study found senior hunger to be a national problem of drastic proportion. “Today in America 1 in 9 seniors— an astonishing 5 million people—is at risk of hunger.” Correlating these figures to our Lake County Communities, almost 7,000 people face hunger in our own neighborhoods.

Released in the Fall of 2009, the follow-up study indicates, the strain on already scarce resources for sound and nutritional meal programs will further become stressed. The study also indicates that Indiana ranks 12th in the Nation for the number of its residents who are at the risk of hunger.

Experiencing this staggering need, and with the most generous support from the community, Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana built a new facility in 2006 with the capacity to produce more than 3,000 meals per day. Meals on Wheels is positioned to be the premier agency in Northwest Indiana to provide affordable hot nutritious meals to our community.
